Time for Flu Shots!

This is an especially important year to get your flu shot! Flu season runs from October to May, so it's best to get your flu shot by Halloween. The flu vaccine is available throughout flu season. Call your child's pediatrician today to schedule an appointment!

Flu vs. Cold

The flu rate has started to increase in communities in Vermont, and is widespread in surrounding states. We have seen a few cases of flu at MBS. Unlike the common cold, the flu can cause serious illness and can be life-threatening. The flu is suspected if there is a sudden onset of a high fever, cough, and fatigue. Contact your child’s pediatrician if you suspect the flu.

It’s not too late to get a flu shot! In addition to getting your flu shot, simple everyday actions can help stop flu in its tracks - wash your hands, cover your cough, and stay home if you're sick. The flu spreads from person to person when an infected person coughs or sneezes. You can help limit the spread of illness by teaching your child to cough or sneeze into their elbow. Students need to stay home at least 24 hours after a fever has resolved, without fever reducing medication (ie Tylenol or Advil) and often need extra days of rest with the flu to recuperate. Please help prevent the spread of flu to other students and staff members by keeping sick children home.

Say Boo to the Flu!

Last week 43 MBS teachers and staff members received a flu vaccine at our staff flu clinic! We are committed to helping our school community stay healthy this winter. Now is the time to get your child vaccinated against the flu. Getting the flu shot is recommended for all kids ages 6 months and older. Not only will it protect your child from the flu, it will also help prevent the spread to classmates, siblings, and other family members.

The flu shot is the most important way to prevent getting the flu. You can also teach your child to do frequent handwashing and to avoid touching their eyes, nose, or mouth at school.

There is both an injection and nasal spray available this year. Check with your pediatrician to see which is the best option for your child.

The CDC has a lot of information about the flu vaccine for children like this Flu Guide for Parents.

What better time to remind you about flu shots than National Influenza Vaccination Week!? If your child hasn't received their vaccine yet, now's a great time to get it done. Any child over 6 months of age should get a flu vaccine.  Visit the CDC website for more information about the Flu Vaccine.
