COVID-19/Coronavirus

It's been hard to miss the media coverage of the outbreak of COVID-19, a new coronavirus that is circulating the globe. The Vermont Department of Health is closely monitoring this virus, and has been providing guidance to Vermont schools. There are currently no cases of COVID-19 in Vermont.

**As of 3/5/20, the CDC is advising that returning travelers whose last day in China, Italy, South Korea or Iran was March 4 or afterwards should stay home and monitor their health for 14 days after returning to the United States. Travelers returning from Japan should monitor their health for 14 days after returning to the United States.** If you or your family visited Iran, Italy, S.Korea, Japan or China over winter break, please contact the Vermont Department of Health at (802) 863-7240 and let them know you have returned from an affected area, they will give you guidance. Please let your school nurse know as well.

Many of the precautions that help prevent other respiratory diseases, like colds and the flu, can also help keep an illness like COVID-19 from spreading. These are standard precautions that we already encourage at Malletts Bay:
  • Frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with your sleeve or a tissue. Throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Hearing the news and media posts about this illness can be very anxiety-provoking for children (and adults) and cause unnecessary worry. It might be best to limit exposure to these news stories, and instead teach your child about basic precautions, demonstrate and practice good hand washing at home, and offer simple, but reassuring answers to questions your child may have about the coronavirus. Here is a great article on how to talk to your child about the coronavirus.

The CDC and the Vermont Department of Health are good resources to get factual information and guidance around COVID-19.
